GEO vs SEO in one answer

SEO is the practice of ranking pages in search results, measured by positions, impressions and clicks. GEO is the practice of getting your pages cited and your brand named in answers from Google AI Overviews, AI Mode, ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini and Claude, measured by mentions and citations. Google says its AI features are rooted in its core ranking and quality systems, so GEO builds on SEO rather than replacing it.

01 · Side by side

GEO vs SEO at a glance.

The main difference between GEO and SEO is the unit of success: a ranked link for SEO, a mention or citation inside a written answer for GEO. The table sums up the GEO vs SEO differences covered below.

02 · Definition

What is SEO?

Search engine optimization is the work of getting pages crawled, indexed and ranked in search results. You research what people search for, publish pages that answer it well, keep the site technically healthy and earn links that signal authority.

The scoreboard is familiar: positions, impressions and clicks. Because the result is a list, several brands can win the same query, and a page in position five still gets some traffic.

SEO is also the entry ticket for Google's AI features. To be a supporting link in AI Overviews or AI Mode, a page must be indexed and eligible to show with a snippet, and there are no extra requirements beyond that (Google).

03 · Definition

What is GEO?

Generative engine optimization is the work of getting your content used, cited and named when an AI system writes the answer. That covers Google AI Overviews and AI Mode, plus assistants that search the web, such as ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini and Claude. For the full definition and the research behind the term, see the generative engine optimization page.

GEO matters because much research now ends on the results page. SparkToro found that 68.01% of Google searches ended without a click in January to April 2026, based on Similarweb data (SparkToro, June 2026). When a person reads the answer instead of visiting pages, the brands named in that answer get the attention.

The scoreboard changes shape. Instead of a position, you track whether the answer mentions you, whether it links to your page, and whether it describes you correctly.

04 · Key differences

SEO vs GEO: the five differences that matter.

SEO vs GEO differs in five practical ways: what counts as a win, how the engine searches, what a win is worth, how stable results are and how many engines you answer to. The foundation stays the same.

  • 01

    Rankings versus citations

SEO counts positions. GEO counts whether the answer cites you, and ranking first is no guarantee. Ahrefs found that 37.9% of URLs cited in AI Overviews rank in Google's top 10 for the query (Ahrefs, March 2026). For AI assistants, 12% of cited URLs rank in the top 10 for the same prompt (Ahrefs, August 2025).

  • 02

    Keywords versus fan-out queries

SEO targets a keyword with a page. AI features expand a question with query fan-out, which Google defines as "a set of concurrent, related queries generated by the model" (Google Search Central). In AI Mode, Deep Search can issue hundreds of searches for one question (Google). One answer can pull from pages that rank for the sub-queries, not only the typed one.

  • 03

Clicks versus being in the answer

SEO earns a visit. In Pew's study of 900 U.S. adults, people clicked a result on 8% of visits with an AI summary and on 15% without one (Pew Research, July 2025). When an AI Overview shows, the top result gets 58% lower average CTR (Ahrefs, February 2026). Being cited helps: cited brands got 120% more organic clicks per impression than brands not cited (Seer Interactive, April 2026).

  • 04

    Stable rankings versus changing answers

Rankings move, but slowly enough to report weekly. AI Overviews change every 2.15 days on average, and consecutive versions share 54.5% of their cited URLs (Ahrefs). GEO results need repeated checks and trends, not one snapshot.

  • 05

    One engine versus many

Most SEO work targets Google. GEO also covers assistants that run their own web searches and cite sources, including ChatGPT search, Claude web search and Copilot Search in Bing. Each engine can pick a different set of sources for the same question.

05 · The mechanics

How AI engines pick sources.

AI engines pick sources by searching first and writing second. Google says its generative AI features are rooted in its core Search ranking and quality systems, and ground answers in content those systems find (Google Search Central). There is a ranking system underneath; it is the one SEO already works with.

Fan-out widens the pool. Because the model runs related searches, a page that answers one sub-question well can be cited even when it does not rank for the original query. Google's own example turns "how to fix a lawn that's full of weeds" into searches for the best herbicides for lawns, removing weeds without chemicals and preventing weeds in a lawn.

Google's advice for AI search matches its SEO advice: unique content that is not a commodity, a good page experience, crawl and index access, and structured data that matches visible content (Google, May 2025). It also warns that seeking inauthentic mentions across the web is not as helpful as it might seem, and that no third-party tool has access to its internal ranking or AI systems.

06 · Playbook

How to do GEO, in five steps.

To do GEO, keep your pages accessible, find the questions that matter, publish content worth citing, cover related questions on strong pages, and measure what the engines say. None of it needs special files or a rewrite for machines.

  1. 1

    Check access and snippets

Make sure the pages you want cited can be crawled, indexed and shown with a snippet. Preview controls such as nosnippet and max-snippet also limit what AI features can show (Google, May 2025).

  2. 2

    Take a baseline

List the questions buyers ask in your category and run them in Google AI Mode, ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini and Claude. Note which brands are named, which pages are cited and whether the description of your brand is correct.

  3. 3

    Publish content worth citing

Write for people, with facts, data and experience a competitor cannot copy. Google says content does not need to be chunked or rewritten specifically for AI systems (Google Search Central).

  4. 4

Cover related questions on strong pages

Answer the follow-up questions fan-out is likely to ask inside your best pages. Do not build a thin page for every sub-query: Google says pages made mainly to match fan-out queries can violate its scaled content abuse policy.

  5. 5

    Measure in two layers

Use Search Console for Google's AI surfaces and a fixed prompt set for the other assistants. Review trends over weeks, and tie changes to visits and conversions, not only clicks.

07 · Terminology

GEO vs SEO vs AEO.

GEO vs SEO vs AEO is mostly a question of labels. SEO ranks pages, AEO aims to be the direct answer, and GEO aims to be cited in AI-written answers. Google treats AEO and GEO work as "still SEO" (Google Search Central).

08 · Straight answer

Is GEO replacing SEO?

No. GEO extends SEO; it does not replace it. Google says optimizing for its generative AI features is optimizing for the search experience, and thus still SEO (Google Search Central).

  1. 01

The same systems pick the sources

Google's AI features are rooted in its core ranking and quality systems, so weak technical health and thin content hurt both scoreboards.

  2. 02

Answers still send people to pages

Cited pages are where a reader goes for more, and cited brands got more organic clicks per impression (Seer Interactive, April 2026).

  3. 03

    The gap is measurement

Much of the groundwork is shared between GEO vs traditional SEO. The new part is seeing whether AI answers name you.

The practical move is to run SEO and GEO together and track rankings and AI citations side by side. For plans that include AI visibility tracking, see AISEO pricing.

09 · Measurement

The KPIs for GEO vs SEO overlap but do not map one to one. Search Console now reports AI impressions for Google, and prompt tracking covers the assistants it does not.

10 · Pitfalls

Five mistakes teams make with GEO.

Most GEO mistakes come from treating it as a trick separate from SEO. Google's AI optimization guide addresses each of these directly.

  • Dropping SEO to chase GEO

Google's AI features run on its core ranking systems. Cutting technical work and content quality weakens rankings and citations at the same time.

  • Treating llms.txt or schema as a requirement

Google Search ignores llms.txt, and structured data is not required for its generative AI features. Schema is still useful for rich results. Read more in the llms.txt page.

  • Making a page for every fan-out query

Pages built mainly to match each sub-query, in order to manipulate rankings or AI answers, can violate Google's scaled content abuse policy.

  • Seeding mentions

Paid posts dressed up as opinions and planted forum comments are a risk. Google says seeking inauthentic mentions is not as helpful as it might seem.

  • Treating one spot check as tracking

AI Overviews change every 2.15 days on average (Ahrefs). One screenshot proves little; repeat the same prompts over time.

11 · FAQs

Common questions about GEO vs SEO.

What is the difference between GEO and SEO?

SEO gets a page ranked in search results. GEO gets your page cited and your brand named inside an AI answer. They share the same foundation of crawlable, useful content, but SEO counts positions and clicks while GEO counts mentions and citations.

Can GEO replace SEO?

No. Google says its AI features are rooted in its core ranking and quality systems, and that optimizing for them is still SEO. GEO adds new measurements and more engines on top of SEO work.

Is SEO dead now with AI?

No. To be a supporting link in AI Overviews or AI Mode, a page must be indexed and eligible to show with a snippet, which is SEO work. What changes is that fewer searches end in a click, so being named in the answer matters more.

What is GEO in digital marketing?

In digital marketing, GEO means generative engine optimization: making your content easy for AI systems to find, trust and cite, so your brand appears in answers from AI Overviews, AI Mode, ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini and Claude. It does not mean geographic targeting in this context.

What is AEO vs GEO?

Answer engine optimization (AEO) focuses on becoming the direct answer to a question. GEO focuses on being cited across generative engines. Writers disagree on whether they are separate practices, and Google treats both as SEO. See the answer engine optimization page.

Do I need llms.txt or schema for GEO?

Not for Google. Google Search ignores llms.txt, and structured data is not required for its generative AI features, though schema still helps with rich results. See the llms.txt page.
