Answer engine optimization (AEO): what it is and how to do it

Answer engine optimization is the work of making your content the source an answer engine quotes, cites or reads aloud when someone asks a question. This guide covers how each answer engine picks its answer, a strategy a marketing team can run, what AEO tools and services do, and how to measure progress.

AEO definition

Answer engine optimization (AEO) is the practice of structuring accurate, useful content so that answer engines, such as Google AI Overviews and AI Mode, featured snippets, ChatGPT, Perplexity and voice assistants, use it as the answer to a question and name or link your brand as the source.

Definition

What is AEO?

AEO, short for answer engine optimization, is optimizing content to be selected as the direct answer to a question rather than as one link in a list. An answer engine is any system that replies with an answer first: a featured snippet, an AI summary, a chatbot reply or a spoken response.

The term started with featured snippets and voice search, where one result took the answer slot. It now covers AI assistants that write an answer from several pages and cite them. The unit of success is the same in both eras: your fact, your wording or your brand inside the answer.

AEO sits close to generative engine optimization. People who search "AEO GEO" usually want to know how the two relate: GEO focuses on answers written by generative models, while AEO also includes snippets and voice. See generative engine optimization and the comparison in GEO vs SEO. For Google's own search, both labels describe work Google calls still SEO.

Side by side

SEO vs AEO.

SEO earns a ranked link; AEO earns the answer itself. AEO builds on SEO, because answer engines draw from pages they can crawl and index, but it changes what you write for, where you look for results and which numbers you report.

How it works

How answer engines choose answers.

Each answer engine searches an index, picks the passages that best answer the question, and shows or reads them with a source. The index, the crawler and the number of sources differ by engine, so the same page can win in one and miss in another.

  1. 01

Google AI Overviews and AI Mode

Google says there are no additional requirements to appear in these features. The page needs to be indexed and allowed to show a snippet before Google can use it as a source, and the site has to be opted in to generative AI features in Search Console (Google). AI Mode splits a question into related searches, and Deep Search can run hundreds of them (Google).

  2. 02

    Featured snippets

The original answer engine. Google describes them as boxes that show the descriptive snippet first, and says its systems decide automatically whether a page would make a good one; you cannot mark a page up as a featured snippet (Google).

  3. 03

    ChatGPT

ChatGPT search, launched in October 2024, answers with links to sources (OpenAI). OpenAI's crawler docs say sites that opt out of OAI-SearchBot will not be shown in ChatGPT search answers (OpenAI), so check robots.txt before anything else.

  4. 04

    Perplexity and Copilot

Perplexity uses PerplexityBot to surface and link websites in its results (Perplexity). Copilot Search in Bing links whole sentences to their sources (Microsoft Bing). Overlap with Google differs by engine: in an Ahrefs study, 28.6% of URLs Perplexity cited also held a Google top 10 spot for that prompt, compared with 8.0% for ChatGPT (Ahrefs).

  5. 05

    Voice assistants

A spoken reply has room for one short answer, so concise, factual passages matter most. Google Assistant uses speakable structured data to answer topical news queries on smart speakers, a beta feature limited to US English news publishers (Google).

Strategy

AEO strategy for marketing teams.

A workable AEO strategy starts from the questions buyers ask, answers each one clearly on a page you already own, makes sure every answer engine can reach that page, and then checks the answers themselves on a schedule.

  1. Step 1

    Collect the real questions

Pull questions from sales calls, support tickets, People Also Ask boxes, on-site search and the prompts customers say they typed into chatbots. Group them by buying stage, from "what is" to "which is best for".

  2. Step 2

Check what the engines say today

Ask each question in Google, ChatGPT, Perplexity and Copilot. Note who is cited, who is named, and whether the answer about your brand is correct. This baseline shows where the gaps are.

  3. Step 3

    Write answer-first sections

Under a plain heading that matches the question, give the answer in the first sentence or two, then the detail, proof and source. Keep related questions on one strong page; Google warns that making pages mainly to match fan-out queries can breach its scaled content abuse policy.

  4. Step 4

Add facts only you can give

Answer engines have plenty of generic definitions. Original data, prices, specs, test results and expert experience give them a reason to quote you. Google lists unique, non-commodity content first in its advice for AI search.

  5. Step 5

    Open the doors to crawlers

Confirm pages are indexed and snippet-eligible, that robots.txt allows the search crawlers of the engines you care about, and that structured data matches what is visible on the page.

  6. Step 6

    Earn mentions off your site

Answer engines also read reviews, forums, comparisons and press. Work with PR and community teams to be named where buyers already talk, with genuine mentions only.

  7. Step 7

    Review and refresh

Re-run your question set, update answers that went stale, and fix pages where engines misstate your product. Tie the work to pipeline and conversions, not only to citation counts.

Measurement

How to measure AEO.

Measure AEO by how often answer engines show, cite and name you for a fixed set of questions, then connect that to visits and conversions. Use Google's reports for Google surfaces and prompt tracking for the assistants.

Google AI impressions

Search Console now reports AI Overview, AI Mode and Discover impressions for every site, available since August 31, 2026, split by page, country, device and date (Google).

Citations and answer share

For each tracked question, record whether you are cited or named, and against which competitors. Ahrefs measured a new AI Overview version about every 2.15 days (Ahrefs), so read trends, not single checks.

Value of the visits

Citations can still pay off in clicks: Seer measured 120% more organic clicks per impression for brands an AI Overview cited, compared with brands it left out (Seer Interactive). Track conversions from those visits too.

Tools

AEO tools: what to look for.

A good AEO tool tells you, on a schedule, which answer engines mention and cite you for the questions you care about, and which competitors appear instead. Judge tools on coverage and data you can check, not on promised results.

  • Engine coverage. Google AI Overviews plus the assistants your buyers use, such as ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini and Claude.
  • Your own question set. You should choose and edit the prompts, not rely on a fixed generic list.
  • Citations, not just mentions. The tool should show which domains and pages each answer cites, so you know what content to fix. See AI citation tracking.
  • History and competitors. Repeated runs and competitor comparison turn noisy answers into a trend.
  • AEO grader versus tracker. An AEO grader gives a one-time score, which is a useful first look. A tracker repeats the checks over time, which is what measurement needs.
  • Honest claims. Google says outside tools cannot see inside its ranking or AI systems. Treat any tool's data as observation.

Who does the work

Answer engine optimization services.

Answer engine optimization services come in three forms: an in-house team, an agency, or a tool your team runs. Most companies mix them. Google suggests reviewing third-party AEO or GEO services against its guidance on SEO advice.

In-house team
Fits whenYou own product knowledge, content and the site, and already run SEO
Ask or watch forTime for regular answer checks and refreshes
AEO agency
Fits whenYou need extra writing, digital PR or technical capacity
Ask or watch forHow results are measured; avoid guaranteed citations or claims of special access
AEO tool
Fits whenYou need repeatable tracking across engines and competitors
Ask or watch forEngine coverage, editable prompts, citation detail; it reports, the content work stays with you

What to avoid

AEO mistakes and myths.

The common AEO mistakes are shortcuts: special files, rewrites for machines, pages built only for sub-queries and manufactured mentions. Google's AI optimization guide addresses each one (Google).

  • Myth: llms.txt gets you into Google's answers

Google Search does not use llms.txt or other AI text files, and says none are needed to appear in its generative AI features.

  • Myth: content must be chunked for AI

Google says there is no requirement to break content into tiny pieces. Clear sections help readers; slicing pages apart is not needed.

  • Mistake: one page per question variant

Near-duplicate pages aimed at each fan-out query can count as scaled content abuse. Answer related questions together.

  • Mistake: chasing fake mentions

Google notes that seeking inauthentic mentions across the web is less helpful than it seems. Earn real ones.

  • Mistake: blocking the crawlers you need

Blocking OAI-SearchBot keeps a site out of ChatGPT search answers, and a nosnippet rule removes a page from featured snippets. Decide on purpose.

  • Mistake: counting clicks only

Answers can inform a buyer without a click. Pair click data with citations, mentions and conversions.

FAQs

Answer engine optimization questions.

How do you do answer engine optimization?

List the questions your buyers ask, answer each one directly near the top of a relevant page, add facts only you can give, make sure answer engine crawlers can reach the page, and re-check the answers regularly.

What is AEO vs SEO?

SEO aims for a ranked link; AEO aims to be the answer or a cited source inside it. AEO depends on SEO basics such as crawling and indexing, and adds answer tracking across AI assistants.

What's the best answer engine optimization tool?

The best tool is the one that covers the engines your buyers use, lets you set your own questions, and shows citations and competitors over time. Compare options in best AI visibility platforms.

What is an example of AEO?

A software company finds that buyers ask assistants which tool integrates with their CRM. It adds a clear, sourced answer to its integrations page, then tracks whether ChatGPT, Perplexity and AI Overviews start citing that page.

Is there a free course on answer engine optimization?

Google's own AI optimization guide and AI features documentation are free and are the primary sources for Google's answer surfaces. For broader context, see the AI search optimization and LLM SEO guides.

Is SEO still worth it in 2026?

It is. Answer engines draw on pages search crawlers can reach, and Google only links indexed, snippet-eligible pages in AI Overviews and AI Mode. SEO is the base AEO stands on.
